Performance Plastics - Part I

August 1, 2019

To the general public, plastics are plastics...and plastics have gotten a bad reputation lately as being unhealthy and harming then environment.  Most people are unaware there is a distinction between "single use" plastics such as bags and bottles and "Performance Plastics", which is a broad range of materials that improve our overal quality of life.  Performance Plastics include:

  • PVC piping used in systems to deliver clean, safe drinking water
  • Polycarbonates used in glazing applications for shatter-proof (and even bullet-proof) windows and skylights for more energy efficient buildings
  • PEEK, which is used in making aircraft lighter and more fuel efficient
  • UHMW, for wear components in conveyor systems and heavy duty machinery
  • FDA approved acetals, for easy detection in food processing
  • Nylons for bearings, sheaves, gears and wear pads
  • A host of other materials used in medical applications, from incubators to surgical instruments to knee & hip replacements and even hospital beds.

Perfomance Plastics, when properly applied will perform functions at a cost other materials cannot match.  In addition, Performance Plastics are superior in many other ways such as:

  • Longer lifespan, preventing the need to replace broken or worn parts.
  • Resistance to harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures mean that plastics can be sterilized repeatedly in medical applications.
  • Significantly lighter weights, resulting in less fuel needed for transporation and a safer environment for workers handling the materials.
  • Parts made from self-lubricating Performance Plastics eliminate the need for added oils and other lubricants.
  • Creating a quieter equipment, which protects the hearing of workers.
  • Added pigmentation eliminates the need to paint the final part saving money, time and the harmful environmental effects of paint.
  • Nearly all Performance Plastics can be recycled.

Stop back next month for Part II, when we explore why and where we can use Performance Plastics instead of traditional materials such as bronze, stainless steel, glass, wood and copper.
